Eighteen rooms are available to visit,
each one richly furnished with harmony and respect of style. In
AZAY-le-FERRON castle you’ll find the work of the most recognized
cabinetmakers: P. Laroque, Has, Leleu, Jacob Brothers, Stockel.
Tapestries, carpets and paintings complete the ensemble. In the
largest suite is a bust of Mrs. Michel, whose reputation of beauty
rivaled that of her cousin, the celebrated Mrs. Récamier.
This anecdote will help understand the richness of the interior
design: At the beginning of the 20th century, wooden floors, mosaic
and ceiling from a private Versailles hotel were installed in Mrs.
Hersent’s office and living room. It required a year of work
to restore the rooms.
You will also find converted guardrooms decorated with trophies
of African animals, including an immense crocodile – hunting
memories of Mrs. Hersent’s brother.
